Hiruni Alwishewa is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva, Department of Public International Law and International Organization. She is leading the development of a policy guidance for the project ‘Preventing and Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism: Towards a Legal-Empirical Approach’.
Prior to joining the project team, Hiruni Alwishewa was a Doctoral Researcher at the Geneva Graduate Institute, where she completed a PhD in International Law, awarded with summa cum laude. Her doctoral dissertation examined the responsibilities of supply-side actors (states, arms companies, banks, brokers, and dealers) to prevent the adverse human rights impacts of arms exports to conflict zones.
Hiruni Alwishewa’s research focuses on the intersection of international security issues with human rights and corporate responsibility. She is a listed expert with the Forum on the Arms Trade and engages in strategic litigation and policy development projects related to the arms trade, cybersecurity, and counterterrorism. She is admitted as a lawyer in Australia and has practiced as a federal prosecutor, specialising in the prosecution of terrorism and organised crime offences.
