Our new RESEARCH AUXILIARY

We are delighted to announce that Ms. Sara Notario has joined our team as our new Research Auxiliary.

Sara Notario is currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in EU Law and Institutions at the Global Studies Institute (University of Geneva). During this academic year, Sara Notario writes her thesis on the judicial activism of the European Union Court of Justice with respect to human rights protection in Europe and will be a member of the University of Geneva’s team that will participate at the European Law Moot Court competition 2020-2021. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Multilingual Communication from the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Geneva.

 

Our new intern

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Tarek Rawil is joining our team as Research Associate for a three-month internship. Tarek Tawil is a humanitarian practitioner, specialized in the protection of refugees and internally displaced persons during and following armed conflicts. He worked with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) during the conflict in Syria between 2014 and 2019. Tarek holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Action from the Center for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH). Currently, he is enrolled in the Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflict at the Geneva Academy. 

 

SETTING UP OF THE Scientific committee

We are delighted to announce the setting up of our Scientific Committee. This committee is an advisory board, constituted of renowned experts in international law and/or social sciences. These experts will provide us feedback on research outputs and guidance.

As specialists in international law, we are particularly pleased to welcome: 

-        Prof. Fionnuala Ni Aolaìn, who is currently the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism;

-        Prof. Helen Duffy, who is Professor of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law at Leiden University and runs ‘Human Rights in Practice’;

-        Prof. Jann Kleffner, who is Professor of International Law and Head of the Centre for International and Operational Law at the Swedish Defence University;

-        Dr. Sandesh Sivakumaran, University Reader in International Law at the University of Cambridge.

In the field of social sciences, we are thrilled to count among our experts:

-        Prof. Arie Kruglanski, who is Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland;

-        Prof. Pierre Lienard, who is Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. 

 
 
 

team members’ nomination

We are pleased to introduce you to our team members. Under the lead of Professor Gloria Gaggioli (Principale Investigator, SNSF Professor), this project is conducted by an international team composed of :

- Michael Moncrieff, Postdoctoral Researcher. He holds degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Sociocultural Anthropology (Ph.D. & M.A.) as well as degrees from the University of Central Florida in Psychology (B.S.) and Public Administration (B.A.) with a specialization in Homeland Security. He specializes on the sociopolitical and psychological causes of radicalization, the social dynamics of terrorist networks, and the effectiveness of policies to prevent and combat violent extremism.

- Ilya Sobol, PhD candidate. He holds an LLM from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (summa cum laude) and a bachelor’s degree in International Law from International University “MITSO” (Minsk, Belarus). His main research interests include human rights aspects of counter-terrorism practices in Europe, principles restraining the use of criminal law, balancing of interests and limitable rights, as well as practices of classification of non-international armed conflicts.

- Sofia Rasic, Student Assistant. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (magna cum laude) and Master of Laws (insigni cum laude) from the University of Geneva. She is currently enrolled at the Ecole d’avocature (Law School Programm) within the same university. She wrote her master thesis on “The Yazidis’ Genocide from a Sexual Violence Perspective”. Her main interests are Public International Law, including International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law and International Criminal Law. 

 
 

nomination of Professor Gloria Gaggioli as SNSF Professor

We are delighted to announce the nomination of Professor Gloria Gaggioli as a Swiss National Scientific Foundation Professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva. She is leading a four-year project on “Preventing and Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism: Towards a Legal-Empirical Approach”The project combines legal analysis with social science research to (1) examine the effectiveness of preventing/combating violent extremism measures and their effects on human rights and (2) analyze the structure of terrorist networks such as Al Qaeda or the Islamic State and see whether they qualify as “organized armed groups” for the purpose of international humanitarian law. 

Professor Gaggioli holds a PhD in International Law from the University of Geneva (summa cum laude), an LL.M. from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (summa cum laude and Henry Dunant certificate of merit ex aequo) as well as a Master and Bachelor in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of International Studies and Development. Gloria Gaggioli has published extensively in various fields of public international law and participates regularly in international conferences, roundtables and expert meetings. Her work focuses notably on issues related to the interplay between international humanitarian law and international human rights law, the right to life and the use of force, including the conduct of hostilities, law enforcement and self-defence. In the framework of the counterterrorism project, she focuses on conflict classification in the fight against terror and membership into armed groups labelled as terrorist.
